Zero Install is an installation system distributed multiplatform software available under the LGPL.

It allows software developers to publish programs directly from their own websites, while supporting family characteristics of centralized distribution, such as shared libraries, automatic updates, and digital signatures repositories. It is intended to supplement, not replace, the package management operating system. 0install packages do not interfere with those provided by the distribution.

Zero Install does not define a new packaging format; Unmodified tarballs or zip files can be used. Instead, an XML format defined metadata to describe these packages and dependencies between them. A metadata file can only be used on multiple platforms (eg Windows, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, FreeBSD and Mac OS X).

Zero Install also has some interesting features not often found in traditional package managers. For example, while shared libraries whenever possible, you can always install multiple versions of a package in parallel when there are conflicting requirements. Installation is always secondary void (each package is unpacked from its own directory and will not touch the shared directories), so it is ideal for use with technologies sandboxing and virtualization.

The XML file describing the program requirements may also be included in a source code repository, allowing complete management of developer unreleased versions dependence. For example, a user can clone a Git repository and build and test the program, automatic downloading of new versions of libraries where appropriate, without interfering with the versions of these libraries for distribution, which continue to be used for other programs.
