What is Clonezilla?

You're probably familiar with the popular proprietary commercial package Norton Ghost®. The problem with this type of software packages is that a lot of time to massively clone systems to many computers is needed. You've probably also heard of Symantec's solution to this problem, Symantec Ghost multicasting corporate Edition®. Well, now there is a solution open source clone system (OCS) called Clonezilla Unicast and Multicast!

Clonezilla, based on DRBL, Partclone, and upcast, allows you to backup and bare metal recovery. Two types of Clonezilla are available, Clonezilla lives and SE (server edition). Clonezilla Live is suitable for single machine backup and restore. While Clonezilla SE is for massive deployment, it can clone many (40 plus!) Computers simultaneously. Clonezilla saves and restores only used blocks on the hard disk. This increases the efficiency of cloning. NCHC Classroom C, Clonezilla SE was used to clone 41 computers simultaneously. After only about 10 minutes to clone a 5.6 GBytes system image to all 41 computers via multicasting!

Characteristics:

• Free software (GPL).
• supported file system: (1) ext2, ext3, ext4, ReiserFS, Reiser4, XPS, juice GNU / Linux, (2) FAT, NTFS MS Windows, (3) HFS + Mac OS, (4) UFS FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD, and (5) VMware ESX VMFS. Therefore you can clone GNU / Linux, MS Windows, Mac OS based on Intel and FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD, no matter who is 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit OS (x86-64). For these file systems, only blocks are used partition are saved and restored. For the file system, type of sector by sector copy is done by dd in Clonezilla.
• LVM2 (LVM version 1 it is not) under GNU / Linux is supported.
• Grub (version 1 and version 2) is supported.
• the unattended mode is supported. Almost all steps can be performed through commands and options. You can also use a lot of boot parameters to customize your own image and cloning.
• Multicast is supported in Clonezilla SE, which is suitable for the mass clone. It can also be used remotely to save or restore a bunch of computers if PXE and Wake-on-LAN support its customers.
• The image file can be the local disk, ssh server, Samba or NFS server.
• Based on Partclone (default), Partimage (optional), clone NFS (optional), or dd to clone image or partition. However, Clonezilla, containing some other programs, can save and restore not only partitions but also the entire disk.
• Using other free software according to register, which is also developed by us, the hostname, group, and SID of the machine of cloned MS windows can be changed automatically.

Minimum system requirements for Clonezilla Live:

• X86 or x86-64 processor
• 196 MB of system memory (RAM)

Limitations:

• The target partition must be equal or greater than one source.
• Differential / incremental backup has not been implemented yet.
• online images / cloning has not been implemented yet. The partition to be imaged or cloned has to be dismantled.
• The RAID / RAID fake software is not supported by default. It can be done only manually.
• Due to the limitation of image format, the image can not be explored or mounted. Unable to retrieve the only image file. However, it still has a solution for it, read this.
• Recovery Clonezilla lives with several CD or DVD is not yet implemented. Now all files have to be on a CD or DVD if you decide to create the recovery ISO file.
